Puri to Become a Municipal Corporation: A Step Toward Safer, Smarter Temple Towns

Following the tragic stampede during the ongoing Rath Yatra festival, the Odisha Government has announced plans to upgrade Puri Municipality to a Municipal Corporation by merging adjoining villages with the holy town.

This move is long overdue. With Puri's growing population and the rising influx of devotees, the city urgently needs improved civic capacity. The upgrade will enable:

  • Better urban services and emergency response systems
  • Investment in new infrastructure
  • Enhanced maintenance of roads, sanitation, and public amenities

Puri will join the ranks of other temple towns already governed by Municipal Corporations:

  • Varanasi municipal corporation manages Kashi Vishwanath temple
  • Tirupati MC manages the Tirumala temple
  • Madurai MC manages the Meenakshi Amman temple
  • Ujjain MC manages the Mahakaleshwar temple
  • Amritsar MC manages the Golden Temple

India's temple towns are not just spiritual centres-they are also major economic and tourism hubs. Governing them with robust urban institutions is not just about infrastructure-it's about safeguarding lives and preserving cultural heritage.
